As is the case with most "DMC" games, you have to play through boss battles MULTIPLE times. but you never get to use it unless you play as Vergil. Vergil's sword, Yamato, plays a HUGE part in the plot. I can't talk about it in depth without spoiling it it's something you'll have to see for yourself. The antagonists, their movations, and their plan make absolutely no sense. It's annoying and flat-out stupid to watch. Most of Kyrie's and Nero's interactions with each other are boiled down to them screaming their names at each other. I daresay that they are the best the franchise has ever seen. The new abilities and moves he brings to the table don't hurt either! I thought his motivations and introduction into the franchise were both really well done. I know a lot of people don't like him, but I personally loved Nero. I wouldn't recommend doing this before you play the main campaign because you'll be really confused, but it is worth playing the story from all the perspectives so you can get a grasp on each character's unique abilities. Along with the main campaign, the game offers you the option to play as Lady/Trish or Vergil.

Back in 2008 and in my opinion still to this day, DMC 4 is the go to game if you want to make something 'Cinematic' without taking away the gameplay element for long periods of time.Ī Masterpiece and I don't say it lightly either. With people trying to push more cinematic games with overly long cut scenes and what not, it's shocking how many do it wrong today. This game will go down in my books as one of the greatest achievements in video games. A daring, stylish, humorous, emotional and epic magnum opus that Hideaki Itsuno and his team should be incredibly proud of. The only thing that keeps this game from dethroning Half-Life, my all time favorite game since 2009 is that the boss rush has this incredibly stupid mechanic that wastes so much time and is just incredibly frustrating to do unless you know what you're doing.ĭevil May Cry 4 is Capcom's magnum opus and the best game I have played by them. The levels you backtrack offer new challenges and different puzzles so you really do not want to miss it especially for the finale. This may really sour your experience, but trust me, it's well worth it. During Dante's levels, you basically just backtrack through the entirety of Nero's levels. Now there is something I should mention that might turn you off from playing it. Plus, with the Special Edition, you can play as Vergil which is pretty neat and also go through Lady/Trish's campaign as well although I have yet to try it. Dante is also just as well done and seeing Trish again and also Lady is also cool. I know some might not like him because of the "Brash Teenager Who Wants Action" personality he has, but Nero is much better written than most of those characters you come across in any other media.

The story was full of emotion and humor and I felt absolutely sorry for Nero at one point. Not only that, but the characters of Dante and newcomer Nero are absolutely believable and grounded characters even if they come off as a bit cartoonish at points.

However, what I didn't expect was it would become my second favorite game of all time, nearly topping Half-Life.įrom the opening cut scene to the final bosses, Devil May Cry 4 is a masterfully crafted game with some of the most stylish and amazing combat the series has to offer.

So going into Devil May Cry 4, I expected to really enjoy it like I did with the original game. The only game I had played and completed previously was the first, which was a incredibly challenging and super intense action hack and slash with some great characters and some questionable voice acting with some of the most cryptic gameplay progression you'd find in a Sam and Max game. Before Devil May Cry 4, I had not been well versed in the Devil May Cry series.
